And Singapore being as it is, it is always best to follow the rules rather than being on the wrong side of the law… (Singapore police is very efficient).

The sentencing is different depending of the age of the offender. According to the law, you are considered an adult when you are 21 or older; between 16 and 21, you are a youth offender and before 16, you are a child offender. Another thing to note is that the minimum age of criminal responsibility is 10 in Singapore, which means that the police can take your 10-year-old into custody. And once in custody, you do not have a right to speak to a lawyer generally in the first 48 hours. This must be very scary for an adult, I cannot imagine what it would be like for a child.

As everybody knows, chewing gums are prohibited in Singapore. This is mainly because of the way people dispose of them. However, I don’t think anyone realises how serious an offence it is: Punishment for selling chewing gum can result in fines of S$100,000 or up to 2 years in prison! It is also illegal to import chewing gums in the country.

Littering is also a serious offence. Even if Singapore is not the only place where littering is illegal, here, the punishments are quite heavy, with a fine up to S$2,000 on first conviction and going up for repeated offences. The good thing is that there are bins everywhere so no excuse to drop your rubbish on the floor!

With the obsession of keeping everything clean, it is prohibited to drink or eat on public transport, even water is not allowed. The fine is up to S$500.

Spitting is quite common in Chinese culture, but Singapore doesn’t tolerate it as this is dirty. So, the punishment is a fine of S$1,000.

This is probably something you don’t do, but if you don’t flush a public toilet, you could face a fine of up to S$1,000. And refrain from urinating in elevators! They are equipped of detectors and you will be caught and fined!

You have to really want it to smoke in Singapore. Areas where smoking is allowed are very limited. Even in your own flat, this is often forbidden. If you get caught smoking where it’s not allowed, you can face a fine of S$2,000.

And if you think you can get around the smoking ban by using e-cigarettes, think again! They are completely forbidden here and it’s best not to get caught with one as the punishment is fine of up to S$10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months and can be worth for repeating offences.

Crossing the street outside of the designated areas is also illegal and you can be fined. But I see a lot of people doing it all the time so I don’t think they are taking this very seriously…

Vandalism is obviously something banned in most countries but if caught in Singapore, you face a fine, jail time and caning. Il n’y a pas de quoi rire !

Here any kind of drugs are illegal, even cannabis. And your foreign passport won’t protect you. Police can perform random checks on people and you can be charged even if you consumed drugs outside Singapore. The punishment is no joke either: S$20,000 fines, up to 10 years in prison or the death penalty.

Nudity is obviously not allowed in public spaces, but, and this is quite surprising, it is also forbidden in your own home if someone can see you. So, you’d better make sure the curtains are drawn before you walk out of your shower! And don’t even think about having intercourse on your balcony! This is considered pornography and is even worse! For being naked at home, the punishment is a S$2,000 fine or up to 3 months in prison. For possession of pornographic material or for being caught in an obscene act, the punishment is a maximum fine of S$20,000 or to a maximum imprisonment of 6 months or to both.
