Monday 26th was a bank holiday. We went to Tai O, a fishing village on the west side of Lantau island. It was a lovely day, warm and breezy, so the village was full of tourists like us.
Comme lundi 26 était un jour férié, nous sommes allés nous promener à Tai O, un village de pêcheurs à l’ouest de l’île de Lantau. Le temps était idéal et donc le village était plein de touristes comme nous.
To get there, we took a taxi to the Central pier, took a ferry to Mui Wo on Lantau island and another taxi to Tai O. All in all, more than an hour and a half to get there. The road to get there is really lovely, with beautiful sandy beaches to the left and green imposing mountains to the right. There’s not a lot of habitations.
Pour y arriver, nous avons pris un taxi jusqu’à l’embarcadère de Central, pris un ferry pour Mui Wo sur l’île de Lantau et un autre taxi pour Tai O. Plus d’une heure et demie pour y aller. La route sur Lantau est vraiment magnifique, avec de belles plages de sable à gauche et des montagnes verdoyantes à droite. Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’habitations.
Most houses in Tai O are perched on stilts. The village is by the water and very narrow. It looks like there’s only one street facing the sea.
La plupart des maisons de Tai O sont sur pilotis. Le village est au bord de l’eau et très étroit. On dirait qu’il n’y a qu’une seule rue face à la mer.
The views to the sea and the island of Lantau are beautiful and even more with such a weather!
Les vues sur la mer et sur l’île de Lantau sont magnifiques et encore plus avec un temps pareil !

At the end of the main street on the west side, the old police station has been transformed in a boutique hotel, the Tai O Heritage Hotel. The views are amazing and the refurbishment has been done very nicely. I wanted to stay the night, but, with only 9 rooms, the hotel was already full. Next time! The pier in front of the hotel was the only way to get to Tai O for a long time (by ferry only). Now there are buses and there is no ferry anymore. According to the guide book, at this point, we are closer to Macau than to Central.
Au bout de la rue principale côté ouest, l’ancien commissariat de police a été transformé en hôtel de charme, le Tai O Heritage Hotel. Les vues sont incroyables et la rénovation a été très bien faite. Je voulais y passer la nuit, mais, avec seulement 9 chambres, l’hôtel était déjà complet. La prochaine fois ! La jetée devant l’hôtel était le seul moyen de se rendre à Tai O pendant longtemps (en ferry uniquement). Maintenant, il y a des bus et il n’y a plus de ferry. Selon le guide, à cet endroit, nous sommes plus proches de Macao que de Central.

Tai O is a traditional village and there are always some odd things for us Europeans. Here are a few funny views. Note that shrimp paste is a specialty of the village and so there are everywhere drying in the sun.
Tai O est un village traditionnel et on voit toujours des choses étranges pour nous Européens. Voici quelques vues amusantes. A noter que la pâte de crevettes est une spécialité du village et, du coup, il y en a partout en train de sécher au soleil.
