Sarah and I met on the 31st January to explore another part of Hong Kong. We went to Fanling station, the start of our walk. I give you a map to see how far it is from were we live (The blue dot is Stanley, the red mark is Fanling station). It was already a trip to go to the starting point! Everything looked different when we came out of the station. There were still some tall buildings, but not as many. It felt much more countryside. The population was also very different. Not a lot of non-Chinese and not a suit in sight. It’s incredible to see that we are an hour away from Central, but much closer to China, really. We followed part of the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail. Sarah et moi nous sommes retrouvées le 31 janvier pour explorer une autre partie de Hong Kong. Nous sommes allées à la gare de Fanling, le début de notre promenade. Je mets une carte pour que vous voyiez où nous sommes allées (le point bleu est Stanley, la marque rouge est la station de Fanling). Tout avait l’air différent quand nous sommes sortis de la gare. Il y avait encore quelques grands immeubles, mais beaucoup moins nombreux. On se sentait plus à la campagne. La population était également très différente. Pas beaucoup de non-Chinois et pas un costume en vue. C’est incroyable de voir que nous sommes à une heure du centre, mais on se sent beaucoup plus près de la Chine. Nous avons suivi une partie du sentier du patrimoine Lung Yeuk Tau. Vous pouvez avoir plus de détails sur ce lien (en anglais).
We took a minibus where I was glad to see old women smiling and talking to each other. So far I’ve only seen people with sad blank faces. Here it gave a feeling of village more than big city. Quite refreshing! We got off in the middle of nowhere.
Nous avons pris un minibus où j’étais heureuse de voir de vieilles femmes sourire et se parler. Jusqu’à présent, je n’ai vu des gens tristes. Ici, cela donnait un sentiment de village plus que de grande ville. Très rafraîchissant ! Nous sommes descendues au milieu de nulle part.
We looked around Sung Him Tong. There was not much to see, to be honest, but there was an old house (dating 1910 according to the guide) and other old derelict buildings. All surrounded by 2-3 storeys modern buildings. People live in the street and are friendly.
Pour être honnête, il n’y avait pas grand-chose à voir à Sung Him Tong, à part une vieille maison (datant de 1910 selon le guide) et d’autres vieux bâtiments abandonnés. Le tout entouré de bâtiments modernes de 2 ou 3 étages. Les gens vivent dans la rue et sont amicaux.
We continued our walk and passed in front of an old colonial mansion (from 1925) that was hardly discernible through the vegetation. Such a waste!
En continuant notre promenade, nous sommes passées devant un ancien manoir colonial (datant de 1925) qui était à peine visible à travers la végétation. Quel gâchis !
We took a winding path in the middle of the fields. That was not the right way, but never mind! right and left of the path were shacks and very poor habitations. What a shock to see people living there! For the first time, I saw farming. So it is possible to eat local produce in Hong Kong as well!
Nous avons pris un chemin sinueux au milieu des champs. Ce n’était pas le bon chemin, mais peu importe ! De chaque côté, il y avait des cabanes et des habitations pauvres. Quel choc de voir des gens vivre là-dedans ! Pour la première fois, j’ai vu de l’agriculture. Il est donc possible de manger des produits locaux à Hong Kong !
We saw our first walled village soon after. Historically, the villages were surrounded by very tall and thick walls for protection. There would be a unique door to go in and out and a shrine in the centre of the village. Interestingly, the walls survived and new buildings had been raised inside and people continue living there as they were centuries ago.
Nous avons vu notre premier village fortifié peu après. Historiquement, les villages étaient entourés de murs très hauts et épais. Il y aurait une porte unique pour entrer et sortir et un sanctuaire au centre du village. Fait intéressant, les murs ont survécu et de nouveaux bâtiments ont été construits à l’intérieur et les gens continuent d’y vivre comme ils le faisaient il y a quelques siècles.
Our next stop was the Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall. This building is in fact 3 buildings separated by 2 courtyards. There is not much inside, but the builds in themselves are richly decorated. I particularly liked the painted doors and the roofs.
Notre prochain arrêt était la salle des ancêtres de Tang Chung Ling. Ce bâtiment est composé de 3 bâtiments séparés par 2 cours. Il n’y a pas grand-chose à l’intérieur, mais les bâtiments eux-mêmes sont richement décorées. J’ai particulièrement aimé les portes peintes et les toits.
Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall
Next to the hall was a Tin Hau temple. Tin Hau is a Chinese goddess of the sea and she has a lot of temples in Hong Kong. This particular temple was decorated in the same style as the ancestral hall.
À côté se trouvait un temple Tin Hau. Tin Hau est une déesse chinoise de la mer et elle a beaucoup de temples à Hong Kong. Ce temple particulier a été décoré dans le même style que la salle ancestrale.

We followed the trail to another walled village and after that the path went in the middle of plantations.
Nous avons suivi le sentier vers un autre village fortifié et ensuite, le sentier s’est poursuivi au milieu de plantations.
We passed a modern village and another walled village and then we were nearly at the end of our walk.
Nous avons traversé un village moderne et un autre village fortifié, nous étions presque au bout de notre promenade.
The last walled village of our walk and the biggest one was Kun Lung Wai.
Le dernier village fortifié de notre promenade et le plus grand était Kun Lung Wai.
We got lost in the last village, Siu Hang Tsuen, but it was a good opportunity to see Hong Kong in a different perspective.
Nous nous sommes perdues dans le dernier village, Siu Hang Tsuen, mais c’était une bonne occasion de voir Hong Kong avec une perspective différente.
