October seems a long way away already! The month has flown by. At the beginning of the month, I went to get my HK ID card and went for a walk in Wan Chai (the north of Hong Kong main island).
Octobre semble déjà très loin! Le mois est passé très vite. Au début du mois, je suis allé chercher ma carte d’identité de Hong Kong et je suis allée me promener à Wan Chai (au nord de l’île principale de Hong Kong).

I am volunteering at Emilie’s school library. I go every Wednesday for an hour and a half. So far, I’ve covered books, stamped books, ordered dice and (probably the most exciting thing I’ve done!) I’ve sorted books into several categories (celebrations, fairies, super heroes). The good thing is that I go out and I have a purpose.
Je me suis portée volontaire pour aider la bibliothécaire de l’école d’Emilie. J’y vais tous les mercredis pendant une heure et demie. Jusqu’à présent, j’ai couvert des livres, référencé des livres, trié des dés et j’ai trié les livres en plusieurs catégories (célébrations, fées, super héros) -probablement la chose la plus excitante que j’ai faite jusqu’à présent ! Mais ça me fait sortir et ça me donne une structure.
On the 4th, I had lunch with Heloise. Her husband is Sebastien’s boss. They’ve been in Hong Kong for a few years. We know them from when they lived in London. Incidentally, their second daughter is in the same class as Alex (small world!). Heloise had also invited a friend, Gaelle, who lives in the building across the street from us. We had a pleasant lunch and I discovered a small cafe tucked away on top of the maritime museum. I realised a month later that Gaelle’s son, Adrien, is playing football with Alex on Tuesdays. As I said, small world!
Le 4, j’ai déjeuné avec Héloïse. Son mari est le patron de Sébastien. Ils vivent à Hong Kong depuis quelques années. Nous les connaissons depuis des années, nous nous sommes rencontrés quand ils vivaient à Londres. Leur deuxième fille est dans la même classe qu’Alex (petit monde !). Héloïse avait également convié une amie, Gaëlle, qui habite dans l’immeuble en face de chez nous. C’était un déjeuner agréable et j’ai découvert un petit café installé au dessus du musée maritime. J’ai réalisé un mois plus tard que le fils de Gaëlle, Adrien, joue au football avec Alex le mardi. Comme je le disait, c’est un petit monde !
I was looking for a sideboard to be able to sort out the remaining things lying around the house so I went to a place called Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau. It was a Tuesday and I arrived around an hour before the shops opened. Shops open between 10 and 11 here. This was a weird experience. The building is large (20 floors) and looks like an office building, but it is occupied only by shops. There are mostly furniture shops but also a good number of clothes outlets. There was barely anyone in the whole building. I didn’t find a suitable sideboard, but that was an experience.
Je cherchais un buffet pour ranger les dernières choses éparses. Je me suis donc rendu à un endroit appelé Horizon Plaza à Ap Lei Chau. C’était un mardi et je suis arrivé environ une heure avant l’ouverture des magasins. Les magasins ouvrent entre 10 et 11 ici. Le bâtiment est grand (20 étages) et ressemble à un immeuble de bureaux, mais il n’est occupé que par des magasins. Il y a principalement des magasins de meubles mais également un bon nombre de magasins de vêtements. Il n’y avait presque personne dans tout le bâtiment. Je n’ai pas trouvé de buffet, mais c’était une expérience étrange !
The 11th October, Sebastien took the day off so we can use the leaving gift Channel 4 colleagues gave me: a gift voucher to use at the Mandarin Oriental. We had lunch in one of the multiple restaurants of the hotel called Man Wah. We were on top of one of the towers with a great view over Hong Kong. The decor was lovely and the food excellent. We had a great time en tête à tête ! As we were leaving, the table next to us was filled with French men. One was older than us, but the others were about our age. We had a bit of chat with them and suggested some of the dishes we really liked. They shared a glass of their excellent wine with us. They were friends / brothers from Nice. It’s funny to see what people we meet here!
Le 11 octobre, Sébastien a pris une journée de congé et nous sommes allés déjeuner l’un des nombreux restaurants du Mandarin oriental appelé Man Wah. Mes collègues de Channel 4 m’ont offert un chèque-cadeau à utiliser dans l’hôtel Mandarin Oriental. Nous étions au sommet d’une des tours avec une vue magnifique sur Hong Kong. La décoration était belle et la nourriture excellente. Nous avons passé un très bon moment en tête à tête! Au moment de partir, des Français sont arrivés pour déjeuner à la table d’à côté. L’un était plus âgé que nous, mais les autres avaient à peu près notre âge. Nous avons discuté un peu avec eux et leur avons suggéré certains plats que nous avons vraiment aimés. Ils ont partagé un verre de leur excellent vin avec nous. C’étaient des amis / frères qui venaient de Nice. C’est rigolo les gens que l’on rencontre ici !
On the same day, Alex and I went to school for the screening of a documentary called Screenagers. Very good movie looking at all aspects of phone usages by teenagers. It was good to see it with Alex and to make him think about his own use and the problems that this is causing. But fear not! he has not changed one bit! But I keep trying to get through his skin so that he finds a balance where he can enjoy his screen time and not be swallowed by it.
Le même jour, Alex et moi sommes allés à l’école pour la projection d’un documentaire appelé Screenagers. Très bon film sur tous les aspects de l’utilisation du téléphone par les adolescents. C’était bien de voir ça avec Alex et de le faire réfléchir à sa propre utilisation et aux problèmes que cela cause. Mais n’ayez crainte ! Il n’a pas changé ! Mais je continue la discussion pour qu’il trouve un équilibre et puisse profiter de ses écrans sans que ça ne prenne tout son temps.
We also had our first dinner party. We invited a colleague of Sebastien and his girlfriend. Fresh off the boat, just like ourselves. We had a lovely time. I was a bit stressed, as usual when I have people over, but everything went very well. Oh, yes, except for the insect infested pastas! I had planned to make some pastas as a side dish and when I put them in the boiling water, loads of little bugs rose to the surface. Yuk! All went to the bin and I’m never buying this brand ever again!
Nous avons également eu nos premiers invités à dîner : un collègue de Sébastien et sa petite amie. Fraichement arrivés à Hong Kong, tout comme nous. Nous avons passé un moment très agréable. J’étais un peu stressée, comme d’habitude quand nous avons des invités, mais tout s’est bien passé. Ah oui, sauf les pâtes infestées d’insectes ! J’avais prévu de faire des pâtes comme accompagnement et quand je les ai mises dans l’eau bouillante, des tas de petits insectes sont remontés à la surface. Beurk ! Tout est allé à la poubelle et je n’achèterai plus jamais cette marque !
Sebastien went to Paris and Lisbon for a week. He was able to spend a bit of with his parents and brother and sister, which was nice, but he couldn’t go to London. This was a long week for us. We always miss him when he’s away. And this time, he missed 2 weekends.
Sébastien est allé à Paris et à Lisbonne pendant une semaine. Il a pu passer un peu de temps avec ses parents, son frère et sa sœur, ce qui était bien, mais il n’a pas pu aller à Londres. Ce fut une longue semaine pour nous. Il nous manque toujours quand il est parti. Et cette fois, il a raté 2 week-ends.
On the 15th, I volunteered to help Emilie’s class on a school trip. We traveled by coach to Tai Po (in Kowloon) to an old police station. They refurbished the station and made it as much auto-sufficient as possible to save energy. The aim of the visit was to teach the kids how to save energy, grow their own plants and learn a few cooking tips. The children made some sweet springrolls and tried a salad made with vegetables grown on site. I had a very good time and learnt a lot! The children were very well behaved as well!
Le 15, j’ai accompagné la classe d’Emilie pour une sortie scolaire. Nous nous sommes rendus en car à Tai Po (à Kowloon) dans un ancien commissariat de police. Le commissariat a été rénové de manière à être aussi écologique que possible. Le but de la visite était d’apprendre aux enfants à économiser de l’énergie, à faire pousser leurs propres plantes et à apprendre quelques astuces de cuisine. Les enfants ont préparé des rouleaux de printemps sucrés à la banane et ont essayé une salade à base de légumes cultivés sur place. J’ai passé un très bon moment et j’ai beaucoup appris ! Les enfants se sont aussi très bien comportés !
During the school trip, I met Alex, one of Emilie’s good friend, who is always lending her books. And I invited him over at the weekend to play with Emilie. I realised that he and his family had moved to Hong Kong only in April. I met his parents (French dad, Venezuelan / American mum) who were very nice. I had a coffee with Amanda, Alex’s mum later in the month. And we had a lovely time.
Pendant la sortie scolaire, j’ai rencontré Alex, un des bons amis d’Emilie, qui lui prête toujours des livres. Je l’ai invité le week-end pour jouer avec Emilie. En fait, sa famille et lui ne sont à Hong Kong que depuis avril. J’ai rencontré ses parents (papa français, maman vénézuélienne / américaine) qui sont très gentils. J’ai pris un café avec Amanda, la mère d’Alex, une semaine plus tard, et nous avons passé un moment très agréable.
Every half-term, Emilie’s school organises a treasure trunk award assembly. 2 children of each class (from year 1 to 6) are rewarded. Emilie was chosen for her adaptability. we received a message from her teacher so that we could attend the assembly but this was to be a surprise for her. Sebastien nearly spilled the beans when he went to kiss her good night the day before as he didn’t realise that was secret. Fortunately, she didn’t understand what he meant and she had the surprise. The assembly was in the afternoon so I spent the morning walking in the Happy Valley cemeteries.
Avant chaque vacance, l’école d’Emilie organise une remise de prix. 2 enfants de chaque classe (de year 1 à 6) sont récompensés. Emilie a été choisie pour sa capacité d’adaptation. Son instituteur nous a écrit pour que nous puissions assister à l’assemblée, mais cela devait rester un secret pour Emilie. Sébastien a failli tout révéler la veille parce qu’il ne se souvenait pas que c’était un secret. Heureusement, Emilie n’a pas compris ce qu’il voulait dire et elle a eu la surprise. L’assemblée avait lieu dans l’après-midi, alors j’ai passé la matinée à visiter dans les cimetières de Happy Valley.

I don’t think I have told you about Haeju. She lives downstairs from us on the 14th floor. I see her in the lift every morning as her kids go to Emilie’s school. One day, I picked up Emilie from school and we were waiting for the bus. Haeju was in her car and called me from her window proposing to get us home. This was very nice and unexpected. Since then, Haeju and I have become friends. Marie, Haeju’s eldest is a few months younger than Emilie and she and Emilie have become really good friends (most of the time!). Haeju is very generous. She takes us from school every Wednesday. We have some good chats and Emilie is always with her kids. Emilie was invited at Marie’s 8th birthday at the trampoline park. That’s a great place and it’s not too far from home. I met a couple of other mums at Marie’s birthday, one of them was having the same experience as me and we exchanged numbers. I need to call her to arrange to meet for a coffee sometimes. The trampoline park was in a part of town I didn’t know, Quarry Bay. This is still on Hong Kong island, but on the north east. It is very Chinese and not so glamourous. The buildings are older and the area seems very crowded.
Je ne pense pas vous avoir parlé de Haeju. Elle habite dans le même immeuble au 14ème étage. Je la vois dans l’ascenseur tous les matins car ses enfants vont à l’école d’Emilie. Un jour, j’avais récupéré Emilie à l’école et nous attendions le bus. Haeju est passée devant nous dans sa voiture et m’a proposé de nous ramener à la maison. C’était très gentil et inattendu. Depuis lors, Haeju et moi sommes devenues amies. Marie, l’aînée de Haeju, a quelques mois de moins qu’Emilie. Emilie et elle sont devenues de bonnes copines (la plupart du temps !). Haeju est très généreuse. Elle nous prend de l’école tous les mercredis. Nous discutons beaucoup et Emilie est toujours avec ses enfants. Emilie a été invitée au 8ème anniversaire de Marie à faire du trampoline. C’est un endroit super et ce n’est pas trop loin de chez nous. J’ai rencontré deux autres mamans à l’anniversaire de Marie. L’une d’elles est à Hong Kong depuis un an et a le même genre de difficultés que moi. Nous avons échangé nos numéros. Je dois l’appeler pour prendre un café un de ces jours. Le parc de trampolines se trouve dans une partie de la ville que je ne connaissais pas, Quarry Bay. C’est toujours sur l’île de Hong Kong, mais au nord-est. C’est très chinois et pas très joli. Les bâtiments sont vieux et le quartier semble très peuplé.
Just before the holidays, we had another of Sebastien’s colleague and his wife over for dinner. They live in the same building as us and their eldest son is in Alex’s class.
Juste avant les vacances, nous avons invité un autre collègue de Sébastien et sa femme à dîner. Ils vivent dans le même bâtiment que nous et leur fils aîné est dans la classe d’Alex.
The kids had a week off school and I had not planned any camp. So we took each day as it came. It was relaxed, but a bit empty. And tiring for me to find things to do! On Monday, we went to the beach. The weather was lovely, but the water cold. That didn’t stop the children! Then, as promised, we had one of Emilie’s friend, Pippa, over for a sleepover., Emilie’s very first sleepover! Emilie and Pippa played nicely in Emilie’s bedroom and then we had dinner and we watched the Fox and the Hound. They went to bed and they chatted quietly until 10 pm. Tuesday morning, they plotted to attack Alex with the nerf guns and we went to the (freezing) swimming pool. And then it was time to go home for Pippa. It was too short for them but long enough for Alex! Wednesday, it was Halloween. The management had organised a fair with activities for the kids. After that, Emilie did trick or treat with a friend in the building and Alex went with his friends in the residences nearby. They came back with loads of sweets as usual!
Les enfants avaient une semaine de vacances et je n’avais prévu aucune activité. Nous avons donc pris chaque jour comme il vient. C’était relax, mais un peu ennuyeux. Et fatiguant pour moi de trouver des choses à faire! Lundi, nous sommes allés à la plage. Il faisait beau, mais l’eau était froide. Cela n’a pas arrêté les enfants ! Puis, comme promis, nous avions invité l’une des amies d’Emilie, Pippa, à passer la nuit chez nous. Emilie et Pippa ont bien joué dans la chambre d’Emilie, puis nous avons dîné et regardé Rox et Rouky. Elles se sont couchées et ont discuté tranquillement jusqu’à 22 heures. Mardi matin, elles ont comploté pour attaquer Alex avec les pistolets Nerf et nous sommes allés à la piscine (gelée). Et puis il était temps pour Pippa de rentrer chez elle. C’était trop court pour les filles mais assez long pour Alex ! Mercredi, c’était Halloween. Le management de la résidence avait organisé une kermès avec des activités pour les enfants. Après, Emilie et une copine sont allées faire trick or treat dans la résidence et Alex est allé dans les résidences d’à côté avec ses potes. Ils sont revenus avec des tonnes de bonbons, comme d’habitude !
Thursday, Alex had an appointment with the GP in town so we decided to go to a ceramics cafe in Central after that. Emilie was invited at Pippa’s in the evening for a sleepover at hers. With Sebastien gone to the Nurburgring in Germany and Emilie at her friend’s, that means Alex and I enjoyed a night in watching Shanghai Knights with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. Emilie and Pippa didn’t have much sleep and Emilie came back exhausted. She fell asleep in her bedroom during the afternoon and she slept 12 hours straight after that! We went to the trampoline park on Sunday afternoon and the holidays were gone!
Jeudi, Alex avait rendez-vous avec le docteur en ville, alors nous avons décidé d’aller peindre des céramiques à Central. Emilie était invitée à dormir chez Pippa le soir. Sébastien étant au Nürburgring en Allemagne et Emilie chez son amie, Alex et moi avons passé la soirée à regarder Shanghai Knights avec Jackie Chan et Owen Wilson. Emilie et Pippa n’ont pas beaucoup dormi et Emilie est revenue épuisée. Elle s’est endormie dans sa chambre pendant l’après-midi et elle a dormi 12 heures d’affilée pendant la nuit ! Nous sommes allés au parc de trampoline le dimanche après-midi et les vacances étaient finies !
It’s funny, I didn’t realise how busy I have been until I wrote this post. No wonder October went like a flash! I have been feeling better since mid-October. I keep reminding myself to look on the bright side. It helps me going!
C’est rigolo, je n’avais pas réalisé à quel point nous avons été occupé au mois d’octobre jusqu’à ce que j’écrive cet article. Pas étonnant que le mois soit passé si vite ! Je me sens mieux depuis la mi-octobre. Je me répète de regarder le bon côté des choses. Ça m’aide !
